Ange Postecoglou Discusses Cristian Romero’s Outbursts and Micky van de Ven’s Potential
Ange Postecoglou has commented on Cristian Romero’s fiery demeanor at Tottenham, linking it to his experiences with the Argentine national team.
Currently suspended, the Spurs captain has frequently expressed his frustrations on social media regarding club decisions. His recent remarks followed the transfer window, where he criticized the club for not enhancing the squad, labeling the situation as “unbelievable but true, and disgraceful.”
In an interview on The Overlap podcast, Postecoglou addressed Romero’s discipline and media scrutiny, humorously noting he hesitated to reprimand the World Cup winner during training.
He expressed affection for Romero’s intense playing style, citing the player’s courage and leadership. “I mean, would you rather have Roy [Keane] on your side or opposing you? We wouldn’t have won that final without Romero,” he asserted.
Postecoglou acknowledged that while Romero sometimes oversteps boundaries, his mindset is essential to the team. “You need that mentality in a group,” he noted, indicating that such intensity must be carefully managed.
Discussing Romero’s respect among players, Postecoglou said, “They respect him; they fear him. His frustration stems from comparing Tottenham’s lack of signings with teammates like Fernandez and Martinez, who are winning.” He believes that having such characters in the locker room is crucial, as long as their passion is nurtured properly.
Postecoglou also praised Micky van de Ven, Romero’s defensive partner, for his potential and areas of development. Highlighting Van de Ven’s technical skills and physical abilities, he noted, “He possesses a strong mindset and is very coachable, which bodes well for his future.”
