Aprilia’s Ambitious Pursuit of Bagnaia
Aprilia’s CEO, Massimo Rivola, is making significant efforts to entice two-time MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia to join their team, teaming up with Marco Bezzecchi for the upcoming season.
Ducati’s Upcoming Announcements
Ducati is anticipated to reveal Marc Marquez’s contract extension for the 2027 and 2028 MotoGP seasons shortly, which may clear the path for Pedro Acosta to join the team during the same timeframe.
Bagnaia’s Shift in Focus
With Marquez’s renewal likely to leave Bagnaia without a position in Ducati’s lineup, he has started looking for new opportunities. His agent, Gianluca Falcioni, has been discreetly discussing potential options with interested parties.
Exploring Alternatives
Aprilia was one of the first to approach Bagnaia, but he initially set that option aside, considering a shift to a Japanese manufacturer instead. Honda appears out of the running due to their significant investment in Fabio Quartararo, leaving Yamaha as a primary contender in discussions. Recently, it seemed likely that Yamaha would pair Bagnaia with Jorge Martin for the next two seasons before Marquez’s resurgence with Ducati.
Bagnaia’s Team Preferences
During the Sepang test, Bagnaia emphasized that he will not consider a satellite team, stating, “I believe I am a frontrunner rider, so my ambitions must always lead me to stay at the forefront.” He has effectively dismissed a move to VR46, owned by his mentor, Valentino Rossi.
Aprilia’s Renewed Offer
As Yamaha remains Bagnaia’s first choice, reports suggest Aprilia recently improved their offer, facilitated by Rivola’s persuasive efforts. Although Aprilia’s racing budget is smaller than Yamaha’s, the departure of Jorge Martin could free approximately €4 million for new negotiations. Rivola’s strategy includes leveraging the friendship and camaraderie between Bezzecchi and Bagnaia, who are both part of the VR46 Rider Academy.
Time Is of the Essence
With discussions heating up, Aprilia’s appeal is bolstered by the competitiveness of the RS-GP over Yamaha’s M1 V4. Rivola, after extending Bezzecchi’s contract, commented, “I’m not saying yes or no. There are interesting scenarios.” However, rapid developments are anticipated once Marquez’s extension is finalized, prompting quick moves in the rider market as both Yamaha and Aprilia vie for Bagnaia’s signature.
