Shohei Ohtani Takes the Lead
Shohei Ohtani is well-acquainted with being at the forefront of rankings, but this season marks a new milestone for him.
MLB Hitter Power Rankings Update
Ohtani has ascended to the No. 1 spot in the latest Hitter Power Rankings, which are determined by a formula from MLB.com’s data team. This formula evaluates players based on their recent performance, overall season performance, and a year-long performance metric. The focus is primarily on the first two categories.
Current Hitter Power Rankings
(Stats are current through Tuesday’s games unless stated otherwise.)
1. Shohei Ohtani, Dodgers (Previous Rank: 3)
After placing second four times and third twice this season, Ohtani is now leading the pack. Since the last rankings were published, he has recorded a .366/.500/.805 slash line with five home runs, tying him for the National League lead at 44 home runs as of Wednesday. Ohtani also leads the Major Leagues with 301 total bases and 120 runs scored, putting him on track for one of MLB’s rare 150-run seasons.
2. Kyle Schwarber, Phillies (Previous Rank: 1)
Schwarber had recently surged to the top but has since dropped a spot after a slight decline in performance over the last two weeks. He still leads the league with 109 RBIs and hit his 45th home run on Wednesday, making him three away from setting a personal record of 47 home runs.
4. Aaron Judge, Yankees (Previous Rank: 4)
Following a 10-game stint on the injured list, Judge has played 12 games with a .250/.434/.500 line, totaling three home runs and seven RBIs. His recent performance shows a 211-point drop in slugging percentage from earlier this season, but he appears to be regaining form, hitting home runs in three of his last six games, bringing his career total to 40.
5. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Blue Jays (Not Ranked)
Guerrero’s recent hamstring injury, sustained while playing first base, is hoped to be mild, keeping him day-to-day. Before this setback, he was performing exceptionally, posting a .362/.435/.690 line with nine home runs in the 30 games following the All-Star break. This turnaround has been crucial for the Blue Jays after a lackluster first half.
