As we wrap up our Northwestern baseball 2026 position previews, let’s review a fairly seasoned outfield squad that includes two returning starters and a few intriguing newcomers. What can the Wildcats’ outfielders contribute in 2026?
Jackson Freeman, Junior, RF
Following a standout freshman season with 11 home runs and an OPS of .866, Freeman experienced a dip in his 2025 stats. Although his batting average improved from .247 to .255, his OPS fell to .780 with only six home runs in 52 games. However, this shouldn’t diminish his impact; Freeman is a true talent and will be a key asset for the Wildcats in 2026.
Over the summer, Freeman showcased his skills in the Cape Cod League, hitting .259 against highly competitive summer baseball. Notably, he started 38 games for the Chatham Anglers, committing just one error and racking up five outfield assists.
As he heads into 2026, Freeman is expected to reclaim his position as the Wildcats’ primary right fielder, with a focus on increasing his power numbers while enhancing his overall efficiency.
Jack Lausch, Senior, CF
Welcome back, quarterback.
Lausch returns for his second baseball season after stepping away from becoming NU’s starting QB. Initially struggling at the plate in 2025, the Chicago native made a strong recovery, finishing the year with a respectable .268 batting average.
In 2026, Lausch is anticipated to resume his role as the everyday center fielder. With a year of collegiate baseball experience, he is expected to be a dependable player capable of hitting in critical spots within the lineup.
Logan de Groot, Sophomore, LF
After Preston Knott’s departure, the Wildcats face a significant gap in left field, and de Groot is among several candidates to fill it. The Californian transferred to NU from UCLA, where he started four games as a designated hitter, boasting a .267 average across 15 at-bats.
During the summer, de Groot played regularly in the West Coast League, recording a .236 batting average. He spent much of his time in right field with the Bellingham Bells but has the versatility to shift to left if needed. Though Coach Ben Greenspan may opt for a returner to start in left initially, de Groot remains a strong option as well.
Griffin Mills, Junior
Mills participated in 21 games last season, making two starts and accruing six hits in 19 at-bats. Though he has experience playing all outfield positions, his batting average of .129 in 62 at-bats in 2024 raises concern. However, with improvements made to his swing, Mills has a chance to vie for playing time in light of Knott’s exit.
Zach Carlson, Sophomore
Carlson appeared in 15 games last season, making seven starts as a designated hitter and hitting .276 across 29 at-bats. It was promising to see the Utah native get valuable game experience during his freshman year. If he continues to develop as a hitter, Carlson could be a legitimate contender for outfield playing time.
Marty Kaplan, Senior
With a career .212 batting average, Kaplan has seen his playing time diminish since his first-season debut in 2023. However, as a senior with 12 career starts, his familiarity with the Wildcats’ program could work to his advantage. If Kaplan can improve his offensive performance, he may see opportunities as a designated hitter or left fielder in 2026.
Masai Marshall, Sophomore
Although Marshall did not see action in 2025, he was recognized as the No. 12 outfielder in New York out of high school. He mainly serves as depth for the Wildcats, but with a year of experience at NU, he is likely to make his debut at some point in 2026.
Dominic DeLoreto, First-Year
Hailing from Florida, DeLoreto, who is also listed as a pitcher, is expected to be a valuable developmental asset for the Wildcats this year. While he may not see playing time in 2026, his versatility could make him a significant contributor for NU in the future.
