New Opt-Out Dates for XX(b) Free Agents
The collective bargaining agreement for 2022-26 introduced standardized opt-out dates for qualifying free agents per Article XX(b) who sign minor league contracts during free agency. Specifically, this applies to players with over six years of MLB service who were on a major league roster or injured list at the conclusion of the previous season. Additionally, some foreign players joining from leagues like Nippon Professional Baseball or the Korea Baseball Organization may also have contract clauses enabling them to qualify as XX(b) free agents without having six years of service.
The three established opt-out dates occur five days prior to Opening Day, on May 1, and on June 1. With the regular season approaching, any Article XX(b) free agents in camp with minor league contracts can exercise their opt-out on Saturday, March 22. Triggering one of these clauses allows the current team to decide within 48 hours whether to add the player to the 40-man roster or allow them to become a free agent.
There are alternative avenues for obtaining opt-outs in contracts; many players who do not qualify for XX(b) may still have opt-out options included in their minor league agreements negotiated during free agency.
The following highlights 36 non-roster invitees in camp who can opt out this weekend. While most of these players were XX(b) free agents, a few did not meet the criteria but negotiated opt-outs into their deals. This is not an exhaustive list of all players with opt-out rights this weekend.
Player Updates
Astros: LHP Jalen Beeks signed late (March 7) and has pitched three spring innings, including two scoreless yesterday. He holds a 4.50 ERA from 70 innings between the Rockies and Pirates last season. With other lefty options on the 40-man roster, Beeks may face challenges in securing a spot.
Blue Jays: RHP Jacob Barnes, who logged a 4.36 ERA in his career-high 66 innings last season, may have difficulty gaining a position after a rough spring. LHP Ryan Yarbrough had a successful stint in 2024 but must improve after allowing three runs in spring training.
Notable Mentions: Many players are gearing up for possible opt-outs as the weekend approaches. For instance, Yuli Gurriel from the Padres has performed well this spring, significantly improving his chances. In contrast, players like Luke Maile and Ross Stripling from the Royals may find it challenging to secure positions due to existing competition within their teams.
