PSG’s Champions League Triumph Fuels Sales and Interest Surge
After spending a season in the Europa League during the 2023/24 campaign, Liverpool made a return to Champions League play last season. Despite a last-16 exit, the team still earned approximately £90 million from the tournament, combining prize money and additional matchday revenue.
This financial boost positions Liverpool for a return to profitability in the 2024/25 financial year, concluding on May 31. The club is projected to surpass £700 million in total revenue, with key revenue streams like matchday income, commercial ventures, and broadcast rights showing significant growth.
The Champions League has traditionally been crucial for the financial health of ‘big six’ Premier League clubs, as the revenue generated is transformative for investments in player acquisitions and payroll.
Winning the Champions League can yield over £120 million when accounting for all revenue channels. Additionally, the success creates a promotional boost, as currently seen by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), who emerged victorious last season.
PSG clinched the prestigious UEFA title with a 5-0 victory over Internazionale and has since kicked off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign, which can bring in substantial revenue, potentially reaching £100 million for the winner. While the extra demands on players may be a concern, the financial benefits are significant.
Notably, PSG is enhancing its brand alongside its success on the field. The installation of a standalone PSG store on New York’s Fifth Avenue exemplifies the club’s ambition. Recently, they introduced a new kit with Nike, which increased shirt sales by 37% compared to their previous best during the 2021/22 season, boosted by over 80 different ‘Champions League Winners’ products available shortly after their final whistle.
Furthermore, demand surged for PSG merchandise in the United States, especially following their opening match in the Club World Cup, leading to a staggering 744% increase in online store sales compared to the previous week. According to Fanatics, this unprecedented demand showcases how PSG has successfully translated their sporting achievements into a global commercial and cultural presence, leveraging their brand strength and merchandise offerings.
