On June 6, 2025, 1047 Games released Splitgate 2, but less than two months later, the developer plans to “unlaunch” it, alongside taking Splitgate 1 offline and laying off 45 employees.
Today, the studio announced it will temporarily halt support for the newly launched game to focus on a comprehensive overhaul of Splitgate 2. While it will still be playable and receive the anticipated Chapter 3 update along with some bug fixes, the game as players currently know it is finished.
The game is expected to return in early 2026 with “significant changes.” Despite the current challenges, feedback from players may not be unexpected. The game launched to mediocre reviews, was embroiled in controversy from the outset, and subsequently faced a steep decline in player numbers, sparking numerous complaints among those who remained.
Listening to the Community
CEO Ian Proulx noted a particular Reddit thread titled “If you’ve stopped playing tell me why,” where player grievances were extensively documented. He stated that he and the 1047 team carefully went through the comments to identify the most common issues, admitting that Splitgate 2 is “not a finished product yet.”
Proulx expressed pride in the game’s mechanics but acknowledged significant technical and structural flaws hindering the overall experience. He feels the community prefers something closer to Splitgate 1 and believes a reset to address player feedback is necessary.
Community Demands
According to Proulx, the community’s wishes can be summarized in three key areas: the need for basic features, including a leaderboard and better progression; a demand for more portal walls and opportunities; and adjustments to game modes, aligning more closely with classic arena experiences.
Regarding monetization, Proulx stated that while Splitgate 2 will remain free-to-play, he aims to simplify its current model, which has faced heavy criticism for being confusing and restrictive. He plans to explore a more straightforward battle pass system while soliciting community feedback on the matter.
Proulx admitted that ambitions for Splitgate 2 may have been too high, trying to incorporate too many features simultaneously. Additionally, he believes the studio’s excessive secrecy during development may have hindered the game’s reception. As it stands, Splitgate 1’s servers are set to close soon as part of a cost-saving strategy, with the hope of relaunching Splitgate 2 with substantial improvements in 2026.
