Changing Perceptions of Nintendo Graphics
For many years, it has been common to add a subtle qualification to compliments about the graphics of games, particularly third-party titles on Nintendo systems. We often say they look great… for a Nintendo platform.
Capcom’s Ambitious Releases on Nintendo Switch 2
This context clarifies why Nintendo aims to showcase Capcom’s upcoming games, Resident Evil 9 and Pragmata, as flagship titles. While the familiar backhanded compliments might linger, experiencing these games on the Nintendo Switch 2 leaves a different impression. The compromises that exist seem more justifiable, allowing these titles to feel at home on Nintendo’s latest hardware. I recall earlier times when multiplatform games on Nintendo were noticeably limited—those days may finally be behind us.
Personal Experience with Resident Evil: Requiem
Having played multiple pre-release demos of Resident Evil: Requiem, I’m well-positioned to draw comparisons. I first experienced it on PS5 back in June, and have played it several times afterward, including on the Switch 2 in handheld mode. Recently, I also tried out the Switch 2 version docked to a TV for a more comprehensive comparison.
Handheld Advantages and Gaming Experience
Playing in handheld mode can mask some technical limitations due to the smaller screen size. For instance, I recommend the Switch 2 version of Cyberpunk 2077 for handheld play, as it’s less forgiving on a larger display. This is particularly important for horror titles like Resident Evil, which thrive in darker environments. While earlier handheld versions were successful, the most impactful horror experiences usually benefit from a cinematic setup.
Transition to Switch 2 for Resident Evil 9
After extensive playtime, I can confidently say I would enjoy playing Resident Evil 9 on the Switch 2 in any mode. This represents a significant change for me, as I generally prefer my high-end gaming PC for performance. Experiencing a solid version of RE9 aiming for 60 FPS on the Switch 2 made me realize I could consider it as my primary platform for this title.
Visual Fidelity and Trade-offs
While the Switch 2 version of Resident Evil 9 has been modified for compatibility, it still looks better than expected. Although it doesn’t match the PS5 graphics, the gap isn’t as glaring as in previous console generations. I’d argue it’s likely superior to what you’d find on a PS4. The differences in visuals are becoming less significant, and it’s noteworthy that the Switch 2 showcases the capabilities of the new RE Engine effectively.
Capcom’s Leadership in Third-Party Development
Capcom appears to be enhancing the third-party gaming landscape on the Switch 2. The implementation of AI technologies like DLSS helps maintain performance, which is crucial for delivering a good gaming experience. Overall, if other developers follow Capcom’s lead, the Switch 2 will be an even more compelling option than I initially believed, making it an attractive platform for gamers.
