The Pioneers of Women’s Professional Tennis
The nine players who played a crucial role in the establishment of women’s professional tennis are Peaches Bartkowicz, Rosie Casals, Judy Dalton, Julie Heldman, Billie Jean King, Kristy Pigeon, Kerry Melville, Nancy Richey, and Valerie Ziegenfuss. This group includes Grand Slam champions, world No. 1s, consistent Top 10 players, and Hall of Famers.
Diverse Backgrounds and Shared Aspirations
These players showcased the varied backgrounds and ambitions typical of tour life, ranging from the politically active 20-year-old Pigeon to the 32-year-old Dalton, who worked as an accountant to support her tennis career. Central to this dynamic was the charismatic and determined King, alongside Casals.
Advocacy and Change
During a time when their male peers earned significantly more, the players found an advocate in Gladys Heldman, a forward-thinking publisher for World Tennis magazine. She leveraged her connections to create the Virginia Slims Invitational, paving the way for women’s tennis. Together, they made history on September 23, 1970.
Individual Journeys of the Original 9
Jane ‘Peaches’ Bartkowicz was a trailblazer known for her two-handed backhand. Winning 17 national titles by age 11, Bartkowicz captured the Wimbledon juniors at just 15. As a professional, she reached the quarterfinals at the US Open twice and won the Canadian Open. After her retirement in her early twenties, she transitioned into coaching and later worked for the US Federal Court. Bartkowicz has openly discussed her health challenges, including a bone marrow transplant, drawing strength from her fellow Original 9 members.
Significance of Rosie Casals
Affectionately called ‘Rosebud’ and ‘The General’ for her influence, Rosie Casals won the Virginia Slims Invitational at 22. Speedy and agile, she reached two US Open singles finals and boasts 112 career titles in doubles, making her one of the all-time greats. Inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1996, Casals now supports youth through her Love & Love Tennis Foundation.
A Legacy of Achievement
Each member of the Original 9 not only achieved greatness in tennis but also contributed to the sport’s evolution. From advocacy for equal pay to inspiring future generations, their collective journey has left an indelible mark on women’s tennis, showcasing the power of determination, skills, and unity.
