Damian Lillard Returns to the Trail Blazers
PORTLAND, Ore. — Damian Lillard is officially back with the Portland Trail Blazers.
On July 18, General Manager Joe Cronin announced that Lillard signed a multi-year contract with the team that drafted him sixth overall in the 2012 NBA Draft. During a reintroduction press conference, both Lillard and team officials expressed their enthusiasm for this homecoming.
“It never felt right seeing Damian in a different jersey,” said Cronin at the news conference. “We’re thrilled to bring him back to Portland and see him in that red and black again.”
For Lillard, the decision was clear once he had the chance. “It never felt right not being home,” he stated, grateful to reunite with the team he had left. The reunion came swiftly after his release from the Milwaukee Bucks, with Cronin explaining that everything unfolded smoothly once they realized Lillard was available.
Head Coach Chauncey Billups echoed the excitement, declaring it “a happy day for all of us,” and adding that the organization never wanted to see him leave. “I believe everything happens for a reason,” Billups remarked.
Lillard confirmed his return on social media, posting a video showing the Trail Blazers’ locker room with a special message about being “Together Again.” This decision was also significant for Lillard’s family; he described a touching moment with his daughter upon sharing the news of his return.
While Lillard will not be playing immediately due to recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, he plans to return for the following season. He is optimistic about regaining his form, stating, “I’m confident based on what I’ve heard from those who have recovered from similar injuries.” During his rehab year, he will mentor young players like Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe, and he emphasized that his commitment to the team will be just as strong as if he were actively playing.
