Challenges for Yamaha in MotoGP
Jack Miller expressed concerns about Yamaha’s lack of straight-line speed in MotoGP, likening his experience to being a “lamb to the slaughter.” Nonetheless, he maintains optimism about the manufacturer’s ambitious V4 project.
Yamaha’s Current Performance
This season, Yamaha has struggled even more against its competitors after a winter redesign of the M1 to accommodate a new V4 engine. However, this new engine continues to fall short in power compared to rivals, and the changes have diminished some of its traditional advantages. Factory rider Fabio Quartararo noted that Yamaha currently lacks a “single strong point.”
Last Race Observations
The recent US GP starkly highlighted Yamaha’s difficulties, with all four M1s at the back of the field. Pramac rookie Toprak Razgatlioglu was the best finisher in 15th place, showcasing a tough weekend for Yamaha.
Speed Deficiencies
Austin’s long straights revealed Yamaha’s significant speed deficit. Factory rider Alex Rins recorded a top speed of only 342.4 km/h, lagging almost 6 km/h behind Ducati’s Marc Marquez. Quartararo and Razgatlioglu were notably the slowest in a straight line, falling over 10 km/h behind the fastest times.
Hope for Improvements
Miller’s outlook for Yamaha’s 2026 prototype is generally positive despite the challenges. He emphasized that the team is diligently working on the bike, stating, “we’re trying to open it up on the straight, but you feel a bit exposed.”
Upcoming Developments
The upcoming break in the schedule, influenced by the rescheduling of the Qatar GP, allows Yamaha time to develop and incorporate new parts at the Spanish Grand Prix from April 24-26. Miller is hopeful these updates will enhance competitiveness, especially with necessary improvements like a new swingarm and chassis in the pipeline.
Constant Pressures of Competition
Miller underscored that MotoGP doesn’t wait for anyone, as Yamaha faced immense pressure to deliver following its late commitment to the V4 project. Despite the challenges, he conveyed optimism after the US GP, stating he felt a good pace and expressing hope for the team to improve collectively as the season progresses.
