In the intriguing realm of #Golftwitter, an informal group known as The Burnerverse has emerged. This collective of burner accounts sees themselves as protectors of golf’s traditions, forming a top-100 logo-wearing community united by their passion for the sport.
Membership in the Burnerverse is simple: there are no applications or interviews—you’re either in alignment with their views or you’re not.
I spent two weeks immersing myself in the world of the Burners to understand their culture and language. Here are my observations.
The Burner Manifesto
The Burners share a conviction that initiatives to “Grow the Game,” alongside a post-pandemic surge in interest, have led to an influx of casual participants that dilute the sport’s essence. Their rallying cry against these newcomers is straightforward: #SHRINK.
As Ecclesiastes suggests, few things are truly new. Much of what the Burners discuss online can also be found in various golf forums. Their call for tradition isn’t unique, but it certainly has its own flair.
While the Burnerverse thrives on tradition, it also showcases a bold audacity. Their unabashed attitude entertains, even as it ruffles feathers. The posts often balance humor and irreverence, capturing a unique spirit that resonates with followers.
Before the Burnerverse
#Golftwitter has long been enriched by prominent burner accounts, but it was in the summer of 2024 that a lesser-known voice called Country Club Snob emerged, laying the foundation for what would eventually become The Burnerverse.
Known for blending cringe-worthy content with a sense of privilege, the Snob’s sharp criticisms of mainstream golfers caught on quickly. However, after being uncovered as a member of a mid-tier golf club, his persona vanished, marking a pivotal moment for the Burnerverse.
The departure of the Snob in August created a vacuum filled by a new vocabulary and ideology around what is acceptable in golf culture, forming the core of the Burnerverse.
The Community
The Burnerverse is animated by regular discussions on topics like golf equipment, courses, and lifestyle. However, this open nature also exposes some darker elements, including racially charged language during conversations, highlighting the complex dynamics within the community.
Predominantly made up of young adults, the Burnerverse appeals across various regions, including the Northeast and Southeast. Many members are skilled golfers, contributing to the rich discussions around traditional golfing values.
Engagement and Brands
As an influential group, the Burners often attract brand attention through their collective social media presence. They show a keen loyalty to traditional golf apparel and equipment brands, further cementing their commitment to established golf culture.
Their engagement extends to innovative apps like Course Vaults, which allows users to track their golfing experiences, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm for both the game and its social aspects.
What Lies Beneath
Despite their passion, some members of the Burnerverse may prioritize status over genuine love for the game. This reflects a limited understanding of golf’s deeper values beyond logos and exclusivity.
Critics within the golf community caution against the superficial allure of the Burnerverse, suggesting it may provide a misleading foundation for newcomers to the sport.
Ultimately, while the Burnerverse certainly embodies a vibrant community, it also serves as a reminder that the essence of golf transcends mere appearances and exclusivity.
