Michael B. Jordan and Jessie Buckley Shine at the Newly Named Actor Awards
This year’s Actor awards celebrated winners like Michael B. Jordan, Jessie Buckley, and the late Catherine O’Hara. The event, previously known as the Screen Actors Guild awards, is now named “Actors” to better reflect its purpose, with voting conducted by over 160,000 actors.
In a surprising turn, Jordan won the best lead male actor award for his dual role in the acclaimed vampire thriller Sinners, edging out predicted favorite Timothée Chalamet. Jordan expressed gratitude for director Ryan Coogler and the supportive actors present who witnessed his rise in the industry. Additionally, he recently earned the NAACP Image Award for entertainer and actor of the year.
The best ensemble award went to the cast of Sinners, which features Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku. Lindo remarked on the honor of being part of such a transformative project, stating, “This project is anointed, and we’re all blessed to be part of this incredible journey.”
Jessie Buckley continued her winning streak from the Baftas and Golden Globes, claiming the best lead female actor award for her portrayal in Chloé Zhao’s period drama Hamnet. Fighting off competition from Emma Stone and Rose Byrne, she acknowledged the profound impact of those around her.
Sean Penn took home the award for best supporting male actor for his role in One Battle After Another, although he was absent to accept the accolade. Meanwhile, Amy Madigan shocked many by winning best supporting female actor for Weapons, expressing her nerves and gratitude on stage.
In the comedy categories, Apple’s series The Studio achieved significant success, collecting three awards including best comedy ensemble. Seth Rogen won the award for best male actor, while the late Catherine O’Hara received a posthumous award, which Rogen accepted to loud applause.
The evening was hosted by Kristen Bell and featured few political remarks. Wunmi Mosaku made headlines on the red carpet with her “ICE out” pin, condemning the agency’s actions. Later, Sag-Aftra president Sean Astin offered a prayer for peace on behalf of the acting community. This year’s Oscars, where Sinners leads the nominations, are set for March 15.
