“What irritates me is when people quit tennis because of injuries,” Young shares. “I’ve had numerous injuries, yet I push through, and tennis helps heal those injuries.” He believes that a mindset focused on perseverance is essential for continued participation in sports, especially for older adults.

Similar to how a minor injury doesn’t end a runner’s career, Young hopes that others won’t let the threat of injury discourage them from sports. Tennis has been integral to Young’s life since his school days, along with rugby and squash during his time as a fighter pilot. Now embracing three decades of competitive tennis, Young is preparing for the ITF Masters Championships in Croatia this coming October. He plays several times a week and is adding varied training to his routine, now incorporating a rowing machine for additional workouts.

Young made headlines in 2023 as the first centenarian to compete in the World Masters Individual Championships. Recent changes in age categories make it easier for him to compete, and he anticipates a growing number of players over 100, hoping to inspire others to stay active.

While Young emphasizes wholesome thoughts and a balanced diet, he admits to his love for iced coffee, consuming three cartons a week. He believes in variety in his meals, including meat, fish, and vegetables.
