BYU Basketball’s Nonconference Schedule Upgrade
As the 2024-25 basketball season commenced, BYU’s first-year head coach Kevin Young and his coaching staff quickly acknowledged that their concerns regarding the inherited nonconference schedule were valid.
The Cougars struggled to match the physicality and athleticism of early conference foes like Arizona State, Houston, Texas Tech, and TCU, finishing with just one win against ASU at home and a disappointing 1-3 record.
“Last year’s nonconference schedule was fine, but it didn’t fully prepare us,” Young shared. “Better competition is crucial to our development.”
Recognizing the need for stronger opponents, Young and his staff have taken significant steps to enhance the nonconference slate for the 2025-26 season. They’ve secured notable matchups against teams like Villanova in Las Vegas, UConn in Boston, and Wisconsin in Salt Lake City.
Furthermore, BYU will compete in the 2025 Jimmy V Classic against Clemson at Madison Square Garden on December 9, marking their commitment to face higher-caliber opponents.
“Our objective was to secure six marquee matchups for nonconference play,” stated assistant coach Chris Burgess. “This aligns with our broader strategy and goals.”
In addition to their high-profile games, BYU will face Nebraska and North Carolina in exhibition matches this October, which will serve as vital preparations for the rigorous Big 12 competition. Young reiterated the importance of tougher opponents in the nonconference schedule to get his team ready for league action.
