Unexpected Email Shifts My Business Landscape
Last week, I received an unexpected email that took me by surprise:
We will complete the remaining part of the project contract, but then we are ceasing business with Americans and American enterprises. It’s not your fault, but your president has just initiated a war. We still care for the American people, but good luck.
And just like that, 20% of my income stream is gone.
Facing the Reality of Being Canceled
This marks my first experience with a boycott—my first cancellation. As a voice-over actor, my job is to lend my voice to various projects, from TV commercials to educational webinars. I’ve become the trusted voice that conveys crucial information and builds brand confidence, but now that trust has eroded.
Shifting Alliances and Lost Opportunities
A once-reliable client—a global entity working across continents—has decided it no longer wants American representation in its projects. This decision comes from friendly Canadians, who are rightfully rallying against what they see as hostilities from the U.S.
It’s enlightening to see how our former allies are reacting. I can only imagine the responses from nations that have long had issues with us.
Desire to Prove Innocence
Upon receiving the email, I felt compelled to contest their decision. I considered sharing my voting history and activism to demonstrate my dissent against the current leadership.
Collective Consequences of Association
But the truth is, all Americans are seen as complicit, regardless of their individual beliefs. The world’s patience with us has worn thin, and we will all face the repercussions, whether we support the problematic leadership or are merely suffering under it.
Emotional Aftermath and Respect for Their Stance
While rejection is common in creative careers, this particular loss hurt deeply. Finding a client who respects and values your work is a rarity. This consistent income source has disappeared, partly due to political tensions and the shift towards AI in creative fields.
Despite the initial pain, I find myself respecting the Canadians for their firm stance. At least my former employer was upfront about the reasons behind the contract termination.
Reflections on a Shared Future
Now, I ponder my place in a country where many see its citizens as the “bad guys.” With former allies distancing themselves and new global powers emerging, what awaits us in the American experiment?
I’m committed to using my voice and writing to contribute positively, even as I mourn the current state of affairs.
