We are nearing the end of NFL free agency and moving towards the NFL draft. With the owners’ meetings approaching next week, let’s explore the current situation…
• The owners’ meetings are just around the corner, which means it’s time for rule proposals. I’ll share my thoughts on these changes and speculate on their potential outcomes…
Green Bay Packers’ Proposal to Ban the Tush Push:
I’ve previously expressed my disapproval of this proposal. I don’t believe a play should be banned simply because the Philadelphia Eagles have excelled at it. It’s hard to imagine 24 teams approving this change for that reason.
Detroit Lions’ Proposal to Remove Automatic First Downs for Defensive Holding and Illegal Contact:
I’m not in favor of this due to potential unintended consequences. Coaches might teach players to tackle receivers when beaten, leading to more penalties. I believe this issue isn’t significant enough to warrant such drastic changes.
Eagles’ Proposal to Implement Playoff Overtime Rules in Regular Season:
Personally, I support this proposal as it increases fairness, though I still prefer a full 10- or 15-minute overtime. I’m uncertain if it will pass, as networks might resist due to time constraints for broadcast.
Pittsburgh Steelers’ Proposal for Player Contact during Negotiation Period:
Currently, only agents can communicate during the legal-tampering window. Pittsburgh’s proposal would allow teams to meet players for an hour to finalize plans. I see no argument against this; it is likely to pass without objection.
Moving forward, two additional proposals involve preparing K-balls for kickers before game day and allowing playoff teams to scout prospective postseason opponents during Weeks 17 and 18. These are expected to pass as a formality.
Next week, we will delve deeper into these topics from Florida as we continue to monitor the post-free agency landscape.
