Among her many legendary achievements, Martina Navratilova’s title of the Sunshine Double eludes her—though it’s simply because she was ahead of her time.
In 1985, she claimed her first Miami tournament, known then as the International Players Championships, defeating Chris Evert with a score of 6-2, 6-4 in the final. Navratilova also won the next two women’s events at Indian Wells at ages 33 and 34.
Since then, achieving back-to-back victories in Indian Wells and Miami has become a notable feat, accomplished by only four women: Steffi Graf (1994, 1996), Kim Clijsters (2005), Victoria Azarenka (2016), and Iga Swiatek (2022).
Reflecting on the Sunshine Double, Navratilova stated, “Indian Wells, Miami, it’s quite a trek. There are numerous variables, and you lose three hours in transit. Maintaining focus through all this is challenging.”
On the cusp of turning 70, Navratilova remains active, serving as an analyst for Sky Sports at the BNP Paribas Open, followed by a return to Miami for Tennis Channel work.
In a recent conversation with wtatennis.com, she shared her thoughts on the challenge of achieving the Sunshine Double:
The Challenge of the Sunshine Double
Navratilova: “It’s difficult due to the high-level competition and the contrasting adjustments required for different climates and court speeds. Indian Wells has a quicker pace than humid Miami, which can be draining. This back-to-back duration makes it tough both physically and mentally. You remain in a heightened state of anticipation, even during downtime.”
Current Trends in Women’s Tennis
Navratilova: “Elena Rybakina’s return is significant. Her triumph at the Australian Open showcased her ability to handle pressure, although she struggled with illness post-tournament. Given her performances, it will be intriguing to see how she fares in the upcoming desert matches.”
Front-Runner Analysis
Navratilova: “Aryna Sabalenka, the World No.1, hasn’t competed since the Australian Open but boasts an impressive 11-1 record this year. She reached five Grand Slam finals in six tries, but with three losses, the mental hurdle can impede her progress. Yet, given her improvements, especially in her serve, I believe she can navigate this challenge.”
Young Talent Emerging
Navratilova: “Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek have faced challenges recently, as they navigate tighter competition. Young players like Victoria Mboko and Iva Jovic are making their mark. Mboko’s remarkable ascent and Jovic’s solid performance indicate the exciting future of women’s tennis.”
Final Predictions
Navratilova: “For Indian Wells, Sabalenka remains the favorite due to her formidable skills. If Rybakina is in top shape, they are the prime contenders. However, Gauff and Swiatek could change the dynamics if they find their rhythm again, making for an exciting tournament ahead.”
