TEMPE, Ariz. — Zach Neto aims to remain healthy on the field this season. He holds high hopes for the Angels, especially if key players can also stay injury-free.
“I believe we’re close,” Neto, the Angels’ shortstop, stated. “Our team is experienced; we understand what it takes to compete in October.”
“Trusting each other is crucial. Maintaining our health is the top priority, and we need to show that we can defy the doubters who expect us to lose every game. That’s what inspires us.”
Neto has only encountered defeats since joining the Angels. Mike Trout is the only player on the current roster who experienced a winning season, having played during their last over .500 record in 2015.
Now at 34, Trout is nearing the end of his career, while 25-year-old Neto is emerging as a breakout talent.
If the Angels are to turn things around, Neto is expected to lead the charge. “The sky’s the limit for him,” said manager Kurt Suzuki. “His goal is to play a full season, and he’s essential for our success.”
Neto, who recently underwent shoulder surgery, missed the start of the 2025 season but has shown improvement in his performance. His OPS has climbed from .685 to .793, surpassing the major league average for shortstops.
STEPHENSON UPDATE
Right-hander Robert Stephenson is progressing well and anticipates securing a spot on the Opening Day roster. “Definitely,” he affirmed after a recent bullpen session, noting that relievers typically require only a few spring games to prepare.
NOTES
The Angels rotated their outfielders during Monday’s practice, experimenting for better team flexibility. Veteran relievers Kirby Yates, Jordan Romano, and Drew Pomeranz have yet to pitch in the exhibition games, as they’ll gradually ease into the season. “We trust their experience,” Suzuki said.
