Amanda Anisimova rallied from a set down to defeat the returning Naomi Osaka, setting up an exciting US Open final against defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.
In a fluctuating match, Anisimova took control to win the decisive set with scores of 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-3, marking her second consecutive Grand Slam final appearance.
The American eighth seed had previously suffered a crushing defeat, losing 6-0 6-0 to Iga Swiatek in her maiden major final at Wimbledon just a month earlier. However, she avenged that loss with a determined victory over Swiatek and followed it with her win against Osaka.
Anisimova celebrated her victory, which concluded shortly before 01:00 local time, by dropping to her knees. Her next challenge will be facing world number one Sabalenka, who defeated Jessica Pegula with a gritty comeback (4-6 6-3 6-4).
“It means everything to me. I’m trying to process it all—this is a dream come true,” Anisimova shared. “I hope to become the champion, but for now, I’m just excited to be in the final.”
Anisimova Conquers Nerves for Redemption Opportunity
Just eight weeks ago, Anisimova became the first woman in 114 years to lose a Wimbledon final with a score of 6-0 6-0, a setback that could easily have shaken anyone’s confidence. Yet she bounced back impressively, advancing through the early rounds at Flushing Meadows and calling her semi-final win over Swiatek “the most meaningful victory of my life.”
This year has been remarkable for Anisimova, who had slipped out of the top 400 after taking a break for mental health reasons. Since then, she has climbed into the top 10 and clinched her most significant title to date in Qatar before her runner-up finish at Wimbledon.
Anisimova showed resilience against Osaka, proving she can move past her earlier defeat. “I worked hard to stay positive despite my nerves. This tournament is immensely important to me,” she reflected.
Sabalenka Maintains Composure Against Pegula
Sabling also showcased her toughness by fighting back from a set down to overcome Pegula, securing her spot in a third consecutive US Open final. Despite a disappointing Grand Slam season so far, having reached the finals of the Australian and French Opens, she managed to keep her emotions in check during this critical match.
Sabalenka, who led the first set 4-2 before losing four consecutive games, faced four break points in the final set but held on for victory. “I hope to go all the way again,” she said, aiming for her fourth major singles title, noting the significance of reaching another final.
