Mixed Close for Asia-Pacific Markets
The Asia-Pacific markets ended mixed on Monday.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose by 0.26%, closing at 24,203.32, while the CSI 300 index in mainland China remained unchanged at 4,017.67.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell by 0.28% to finish at 39,459.62, with the broader Topix index also stable at 2,822.81.
In South Korea, the Kospi index gained 0.83%, closing at 3,202.03, while the smaller Kosdaq index dropped 0.14% to 799.37.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 finished the day 0.11% lower at 8,570.4.
In India, the benchmark Nifty 50 declined by 0.53%, and the Sensex index saw a decrease of 0.46% as of 2 p.m. Indian Standard Time.
Indian Stocks Start Lower
Indian stock markets opened lower on Monday, reflecting mixed trends from other major Asia-Pacific indexes.
As of 9:35 a.m. Indian Standard Time, the Nifty 50 index dropped by 0.43%, while the Sensex index fell by 0.26%.
Bitcoin Surges Past $120,000
Bitcoin continued its upward trend, crossing the $120,000 mark to set a new record on Monday.
As of 12:03 p.m. Singapore time, it increased by 1.35%, trading at $120,732.42.
China’s June Exports Exceed Expectations
China’s exports surpassed expectations in June as companies rushed to ship goods ahead of a temporary tariff reprieve.
Exports rose 5.8% in June compared to the previous year, beating the 5% growth forecast from Reuters’ poll.
Imports also increased by 1.1% year-on-year, marking the first growth this year despite falling short of the 1.3% growth expected.
Japan’s 10-Year Bond Yields Rise
The yield on Japan’s 10-year government bonds climbed 5.5 basis points to reach 1.554% at 11:20 a.m. local time.
This marks the highest yield since May 22. Yields generally fall when bond prices go up.
The yield on 30-year bonds increased by 6.5 basis points to 3.111%, while the 20-year yield slightly rose to 2.56%.
Bitcoin Peaks at Nearly $119,500
Bitcoin reached a new high of $119,454.68 on Monday before settling back.
At 10:15 a.m. Singapore time, the cryptocurrency was trading at $119,171.63.
