Attendance Decline Due to Extreme Heat
On Tuesday, tens of thousands of tennis enthusiasts are anticipated to skip the Australian Open as temperatures soar above 40°C. However, Melbourne Park has effectively shielded itself—both physically and financially—from the impacts of extreme heat.
Lower Daytime Attendance
Attendance numbers on the recent heat-affected Saturday were 51,048, a drop of over 10,000 compared to adjacent days. With widespread alerts about the Victorian heatwave, a further decline is expected on Tuesday. The sales of $35 ground passes have been sluggish, and security lines appeared shorter than usual shortly after the gates opened at 9 a.m.
Brief Visits and Reduced Spending
Attendees are likely to spend less time at the venue. On Saturday, after play resumed around 7 p.m., many areas of Melbourne Park were largely vacant, leaving vendors idle during typically busy dinner hours.
Preparedness for Hot Weather
Yarra Jones, 20, from Melbourne, arrived with a friend shortly before 10 a.m. with their ground pass. They intended to use misters and take advantage of air-conditioned spaces but did not plan to stay long. “We’ll come for a few hours and leave when it gets too hot,” she noted.
Impact on Tournament Revenue
Tuesday is likely to be financially challenging for the tournament, although it remains on track to set attendance and revenue records. Tennis Australia has insurance for significant disruptions, but the expected shortfall of around $1 million on Tuesday won’t justify a claim.
Maintaining Operations Despite Challenges
Despite lower ticket sales and decreased food and beverage revenue, the event can still meet its broadcasting, sponsorship, and ticket commitments, aided by its three roofed arenas. Closing the roof, as was done on Saturday, lowers temperatures to below 30°C, ensuring continued play and fulfilling important contracts.
Enhancing Comfort for Patrons
Tennis officials have implemented measures to mitigate the effects of heat on Tuesday, such as delaying wheelchair tennis matches and permitting ground pass holders to enter Margaret Court Arena. Adjustments for ball kids will also be made to enhance their recovery during the day. Ongoing improvements, including increased shade, are being prioritized to enhance the comfort of fans at Melbourne Park.
