Warne’s Dominance Over Cullinan
Shane Warne’s overwhelming influence on Daryll Cullinan is well-known. The leg-spin maestro’s skill was so evident that Cullinan managed an average of just 12.75 in seven Tests against Australia, falling victim to Warne four times.
Across formats, Warne dismissed Cullinan 12 times in 29 matches, prompting Cullinan to consult a sports psychologist before South Africa’s 1997-98 tour of Australia. Warne, a psychological master, relished reminding Cullinan of their history, leading to one of the sport’s great counter-sledges.
In their next Test encounter, Warne joked from slip, “Now Daryll, don’t you dare get out; I’ve waited four years for this chance.” Cullinan, clearly annoyed, shot back, “Looks like you’ve spent it eating too,” referencing Warne’s weight. Warne appreciated the comeback, replying, “Not bad from you, Daryll. Pretty good.”
The legendary nature of Warne’s superiority over Cullinan even inspired Kiwi wicketkeeper Adam Parore. During a Test where Chris Harris bowled to Cullinan, Parore quipped from behind the stumps, “Bowled, Warnie,” prompting a grin from Cullinan.
Axar Patel: A Rising Star
Turning attention to Axar Patel, one of the current stars, he is often likened to Ravindra Jadeja due to their shared origins and similar skill sets, but he stands out in his own right, especially in white-ball cricket. At 31, Axar has been a part of international cricket since June 2014 and has increasingly demonstrated his versatile abilities.
Despite the ‘3D player’ tag that arose prior to the 2019 World Cup, Axar has shown he can adapt and thrive in various game situations. Over the last year, he has made himself indispensable at a time when Indian selectors have been known to rotate players frequently. His self-awareness and ability to respect his limitations and strengths make him a valuable asset.
Potential and Current Standing
Though Axar’s Test career is currently on hold, following a dazzling debut in February 2021, where he took five wickets in his first couple of matches, he has faced challenges over subsequent games. Despite struggles, he remains a powerful player in limited-overs formats where his adaptability shines through, allowing him to excel regardless of batting order or match circumstances.
Axar’s consistency is highlighted by his impressive performances in ODIs and T20Is, solidifying his place in the squad. He recently starred in a match against Australia, earning recognition as Player-of-the-Match for the eighth time in 83 games. As he eyes potential World Cup plays, his readiness and resolve will be crucial for India’s success.
