Senna’s Iconic First Win in Formula One
When it comes to debut victories in Formula One, few match the outstanding performance delivered by Ayrton Senna for Lotus at the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix. This unforgettable drive remains a hallmark of the Brazilian’s remarkable career, particularly for Chris Dinnage, the lead mechanic present in Estoril.
A Remarkable Performance
Dinnage recalls, “It was an exceptional performance by a gifted racing driver who had one mission and that was to win, to be the best. Very few races since have seen someone display such control.”
A Milestone for Lotus
This victory marked Senna’s first of 41 F1 wins, occurring after the death of Lotus founder Colin Chapman in 1982, making it a poignant moment for the team. Dinnage, who joined Lotus in 1982, has since managed Classic Team Lotus, which oversees the team’s impressive collection of historic race cars.
Celebrating Racing Legacy
Dinnage will showcase four of these cars at the Silverstone festival, part of a display featuring all 34 F1 world champions since 1950, including renowned teams like Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull.
Driving the Legendary 97T
Interestingly, Dinnage has driven Senna’s Lotus 97T/2 from 1985, a dream come true for him, especially given Senna’s legendary performance that day. He vividly recalls how storm clouds loomed over Estoril as rain relentlessly poured down.
Mastery Under Challenging Conditions
Despite the challenging conditions, Senna excelled, quickly establishing a significant lead over his rival Alain Prost. Dinnage noted that Senna possessed a unique ability to drive at extraordinary speeds while remaining acutely aware of his surroundings, a skill unparalleled in motorsport.
A Lasting Legacy
Even as Senna’s lead grew, the race continued amidst chaos, with only nine of the 26 drivers finishing. Dinnage reflects on the tight bond Senna had with the team, contributing to an environment of mutual respect and dedication. As the Lotus team celebrated Senna’s victory, Dinnage felt immense pride in what they accomplished together, dubbing Senna the most complete racing driver of all time.
