Jasprit Bumrah has been a focal point of discussion, whether he is actively playing or not. Since it was announced that he would participate in only three out of five Tests for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy to protect his body after a back injury, many questions have arisen about this strategy. With the series balance at risk on a green pitch at The Oval, there was hope for his inclusion in the final Test.
Despite this anticipation, Bumrah was again absent from the lineup.
India’s batting coach Ryan ten Doeschate addressed the situation, describing it as “complex” but clarifying that Bumrah was not merely selecting games to play. “He indicated he would play three matches, leaving it to us to decide which ones. We aimed to manage the situation wisely,” ten Doeschate stated.
With impressive statistics including 14 wickets in three matches, Bumrah has been crucial for the team. However, he has bowled 119.2 overs, carrying a heavy load on mostly flat pitches. “We wanted to utilize him, but we must also consider his physical condition,” ten Doeschate emphasized.
Ten Doeschate explained the careful deliberation behind Bumrah’s game selection, mentioning that even with a week’s break, Bumrah was rested for the second Test. The aim was to balance his appearances effectively, especially given the series circumstances.
Concerns for Chris Woakes
Meanwhile, England faces their own injury dilemma with Chris Woakes potentially sidelined due to a shoulder dislocation. Woakes has already bowled the most in the series, and his absence could impact England’s performance significantly.
