Newcastle’s aspirations for the Champions League were shattered by a 7-2 defeat to Barcelona, securing the Spanish team an 8-3 aggregate victory and a spot in the quarter-finals.
Hoping to create history, Newcastle did so in a disheartening manner, matching the record for the most goals conceded by an English team in a Champions League match.
In the second half at the Spotify Camp Nou, Eddie Howe’s team fell apart, with Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski capitalizing on their poor defense.
Despite trailing 3-2 at halftime, Newcastle’s 3,000 travelling fans and around 7,000 supporters in the city were still optimistic about a potential comeback.
The wild first half saw both teams making critical errors, leaving many unable to foresee the disastrous second half that unfolded for Newcastle.
Raphinha not only initiated and concluded the scoring but also assisted two goals and won a penalty in an outstanding performance. Lamine Yamal also showcased moments of brilliance that left Newcastle’s defense in disarray.
Defensive lapses were evident from the start, as Lewis Hall struggled to intercept a Yamal pass, signaling what was to come. For Barcelona’s second goal, Kieran Trippier and Sandro Tonali failed to mark Gerard Martin from a set-piece, allowing him to assist Marc Bernal.
Nonetheless, Anthony Elanga managed to equalize twice in the first half, providing moments of joy for Newcastle’s supporters. However, his goals would ultimately be overshadowed by the eventual result.
The first half concluded with Yamal converting a stoppage-time penalty, giving Barcelona the lead again after Trippier’s foul was reviewed by VAR.
Hope for a Newcastle recovery quickly dissipated as the second half began disastrously, with three goals netted in just ten minutes by Fermin Lopez and Lewandowski, further deepening Newcastle’s woes. A poorly executed pass from Ramsey to Raphinha capped off a night filled with mistakes.
With this defeat, Newcastle’s Champions League campaign ended in disarray, while Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals.
Newcastle’s focus now shifts to their upcoming match against Sunderland at St James’ Park on Sunday, a crucial match they cannot afford to lose.
Howe: Defensive Errors Were Unforgivable
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe commented, “Our defense today fell below the standards we showed against Chelsea. While our first-half performance was commendable, we made too many individual errors.” He added, “The two goals from set-pieces were inexcusable considering Barcelona’s proficiency in those situations.”
On the Penalty: “We should have gone into halftime tied at 2-2, feeling confident; instead, we entered with a negative mindset. Was it a clear and obvious error?”
On the Upcoming Match Against Sunderland: “It’s essential we prepare mentally and physically for this critical match for us and the city. There’s no time for distractions.”
