Ben Shelton aims for a strong performance at the French Open after impressing in Grand Slam events so far in 2025.
The young American tennis player reached his second Major semi-final in January, where he advanced to the final four of the Australian Open.
However, he faced defeat against the eventual champion Jannik Sinner, losing in straight sets, 6-7, 2-6, 2-6.
After a series of disappointing results on North American hard courts, Shelton bounced back on clay, achieving the most significant final of his career in this discipline.
In Munich, he fell to Alexander Zverev in the ATP 500 event’s final, losing 2-6, 4-6, after previously defeating the in-form Francisco Cerundolo in the semis.
Shelton Sees Unique Opportunity for Americans at French Open
Before the tournament, Shelton was asked if he was already considering Wimbledon and the US Open later in the year. He replied, “I try to stay in the moment.” He stated that each Grand Slam is an opportunity he cherishes, particularly enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and crowds.
Reflecting on the long absence of American success in the French Open, he commented, “It’s been 26 years since a finalist, something like that?” He views this as a chance for Americans to achieve significant success, emphasizing the challenge but also his desire to excel on this surface.
Interestingly, no American male player has reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros since Andre Agassi did so in 2003. In 2024, Taylor Fritz nearly broke this streak but lost in four sets during the last 16.
With hope for improved performances in 2025, upcoming American players will certainly look to Agassi for inspiration.
Agassi’s Last American Victory at Roland Garros
Only three American players have claimed the French Open title in the Open Era, with Agassi being the last in 1999. Despite entering the tournament as the 13th seed and facing lower expectations, Agassi fought through the draw and defeated the unseeded Andriy Medvedev in the final, achieving one of the greatest comebacks in his career.
As Shelton prepares to face Lorenzo Sonego on Sunday, May 25, he represents a glimmer of hope for an American resurgence at the French Open.
