Toronto Blue Jays Navigate Rotation Instability
TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays have managed to cope with the challenges of rotation instability due to Max Scherzer’s ongoing absence quite effectively. Since Scherzer exited his March 29 game after three innings, the team holds a record of 5-3 over the eight games affected, looking ahead to Friday’s series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays, with Eric Lauer taking the mound.
While the results have not always been ideal, with a starter ERA of 6.59 in 27.1 innings across these games, manager John Schneider believes the performances from Lauer, Jose Urena, and the demoted Easton Lucas have allowed the team to “stop-gap” successfully, even as every outing presents new challenges and impacts the bullpen.
Challenges Beyond Just The Starters
Schneider highlighted additional concerns for the pitching staff, especially regarding the workload placed on pitchers before and after the spot starts. “They understand when they are pitching, but for those games surrounding them, we need to tread carefully,” he remarked, reflecting on the complexities of managing the entire staff during this time.
Bowden Francis’ Performance Under Scrutiny
The team’s strategy regarding Bowden Francis was particularly noteworthy during the thrilling 7-6, 11-inning victory over the San Diego Padres. Despite a promising finish to 2024, Francis has struggled this season, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over four innings in his latest outing. Schneider noted the challenge of managing Francis’ performance, especially his fastball location, which plays a critical role in his effectiveness.
Strategic Pitching Management
Given Chris Bassitt’s six innings and Kevin Gausman’s seven innings pitched in recent games, Schneider had more flexibility during Thursday’s matchup. Francis was pulled after four innings and 77 pitches, allowing for reliever Yariel Rodriguez to contribute effectively for four outs.
Offensive Contributions and Game Highlights
The Blue Jays’ offense also played a role in mitigating pitching challenges. They managed to score in the third and fourth innings with contributions from Varsho and Bichette. Although they had opportunities to extend their lead, they didn’t score again until Jonatan Clase’s game-tying hit, followed by a rally that ended in Lukes’ first career walk-off single.
Injury Updates
Meanwhile, Anthony Santander, who exited a previous game with hip inflammation, remained sidelined, and his future playing status is uncertain. Schneider emphasized the importance of careful management to avoid further injury, expressing hope that Santander could soon return without needing an injured list stint.
Looking Ahead
Francis aims to improve going into his next start on Tuesday against Texas. He acknowledges that while his stuff feels good, execution remains a focus area. “Just getting ahead in counts is crucial for me,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to ongoing development as he aims for better results on the mound.
