Emma Raducanu’s Coaching Situation
Emma Raducanu currently has no plans to appoint a new coach as she aims to revive a challenging season in the U.S. next month. The British No. 1 will compete at Indian Wells and the Miami Open in March without a full-time coach, following her split with Francisco Roig, her ninth coach, after her second-round exit at the Australian Open in January.
Current Focus
“At the moment, I wouldn’t say I’m actively searching for a coach,” Raducanu stated while in Tokyo, where she was recently announced as a global ambassador for Uniqlo, marking the end of her association with Nike.
Past Coach and Future Plans
Raducanu reflected positively on her experience with Roig, saying, “I had a great rapport with Francis, but we weren’t aligned on certain key aspects. Despite this, we still have a solid relationship.” As she prepares for upcoming tournaments, she will be working with former British pro Alexis Canter, who guided her to the final of the Transylvania Open last month.
Injury and Recovery
With no tournament wins since her stunning US Open victory in 2021, Raducanu indicated a renewed commitment to her training. “I know the drills I need to focus on now—just repeating the key fundamentals,” she said, hoping to develop a more aggressive playing style.
Challenges on the Court
At 23, Raducanu has faced various injuries and health issues since breaking onto the scene at Wimbledon five years ago. Recently, she had to retire during her first-round match at the Qatar Open after experiencing health problems. She is now recovering from a virus picked up during her time in Romania and is eager to return to full health before the upcoming tournaments.
Looking Ahead to Wimbledon
Though Wimbledon is months away, Raducanu expressed excitement about competing on home soil again. She reminisced about her first Wimbledon experience in 2021 and the support she received from the British public, highlighting the emotional significance of her journey so far.
Resilience in Sport
Raducanu acknowledged the reality of online criticism faced by athletes but emphasized the importance of resilience. “Sport teaches valuable life lessons,” she said. “My goal is to strive to be the best version of myself. Regardless of challenges, I aim to rise each time I fall.”
