Claudio Braga netted the sole goal of the match, propelling Hearts to a 1-0 victory over Aberdeen at Tynecastle, allowing them to extend their lead to seven points at the top of the Premiership.
As league leaders, Hearts seized the opportunity to widen their gap ahead of a crucial match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox, set for Sunday, live on Sky Sports, and they made it count in front of a lively home crowd.
Braga’s goal, scored around the 30-minute mark, marks his 15th of the season and may be one of the most significant of the campaign. This result leaves Derek McInnes and his team watching Sunday’s Old Firm match with keen interest.
With Sir Alex Ferguson observing from the stands, Aberdeen faced another disappointing outcome, nearly extinguishing their prospects of finishing in the top six this season.
Hearts started strong, with Braga testing goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov early on and subsequently heading wide. Aberdeen’s Toyosi Olusanya posed a challenge but couldn’t convert opportunities into goals. Pierre Landry Kabore almost scored for Hearts but failed to direct his lob on target after receiving a pass.
Eventually, Hearts took the lead just before the half-hour mark when Kabore managed to get past a sliding tackle and set up Braga, who calmly slotted it home from 10 yards. Following halftime, Hearts pressed forward, with Kabore forcing Mitov into action once more to deny Braga at the back post.
The second half saw Aberdeen struggle to create clear chances, with Kevin Nesbit’s off-target volley being their best opportunity. Although Aberdeen attempted to push for an equalizer, Hearts remained largely unthreatened and secured a vital three points.
McInnes: Hearts Deserved the Win
Hearts head coach Derek McInnes on Sky Sports:
“I was very pleased with our performance. The intensity and approach were exactly what we needed. Despite some moments of danger in the first half, particularly from their quick players, overall, we deserved the win and created numerous chances.”
Leven: Aberdeen Should Have Been Awarded a Penalty
Aberdeen interim manager Peter Leven on Sky Sports:
“We believe there was a clear penalty incident. We need to focus on improving our performance as we head into our next match, but our current situation is frustrating, especially with the little decisions not going our way.”
