In college basketball, the buzz typically revolves around star recruits, last-second shots, and thrilling tournaments. However, every now and then, a unique story emerges—one that isn’t driven by rankings or scholarship offers.
A Dream Deferred, Not Denied
Brennan Ramirez, a junior at Boise State, didn’t have a conventional path to basketball. His journey began with a towel slung over his shoulder and an unstoppable work ethic.
Growing up in Redding, California, Ramirez played at Enterprise High, where he averaged 16.2 points, 1.9 steals, and an assist per game in his senior year, earning second-team all-league recognition. Yet when graduation came, he found that he had few offers. While some NAIA schools showed interest, none felt quite right.
Instead of forcing a situation, Ramirez chose to step back and became a regular student at Boise State in 2022. However, basketball still had a hold on him.
A Manifestation and a Milestone
On September 7, 2022, Ramirez wrote a life-changing note in his phone: “I WILL walk on at Boise State University.” He believed in manifesting his desires. “When I really want something, I set a goal and work hard to achieve it,” he said.
What followed wasn’t an instant transition. He approached Coach Leon Rice about trying out, who challenged him to prove his seriousness. Ramirez took this to heart, setting a goal to take more practice shots than anyone else. Not only did he meet this goal, but he surpassed it significantly, aiming for thousands more than the competition.
All the effort led to a pivotal moment that most athletes only dream of.
Clearing the Hurdles
However, things took an unexpected turn when Boise State faced a new NCAA regulation, which prevented student managers from joining the roster of the same sport at the same school. This meant that Ramirez was ineligible.
Despite this setback, the Broncos’ staff submitted a waiver to the NCAA in hopes of making an exception for him. For nearly two months, Ramirez waited anxiously to learn his fate.
Then, during a team meeting, Coach Rice presented a jersey with Ramirez’s name and number 20. Just like that, he transitioned from manager to team member.
“It was surreal,” claimed Ramirez. “When the coach showed me the jersey, I felt overwhelming joy.” This moment, captured on video, saw his teammates celebrating around him.
More Than Just a Spot
Now in his junior year, while not always the most prominent player, Ramirez’s contributions are felt in every practice and game. His relentless drive from his days as a manager now translates to his time on the court, where he may not rack up points but impacts the game significantly.
His dedication has garnered respect from teammates and coaches alike. Fans also notice when he enters the game, cheering not for points but in recognition of his perseverance.
