Brooke Biermann: A Tale of Grit and Resilience
BANDON, Ore. – Don’t be misled by Brooke Biermann’s charming demeanor off the golf course. This All-American girl from St. Louis is not just amiable and kind, but she transforms into a fierce competitor when she steps onto the green.
According to her father, Bill Biermann, “The kid will give everything she’s got, and she never gives up.” This resolve was evident as she faced a right-wrist injury shortly before the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Bandon Dunes, marking her final tournament before turning pro.
Despite trailing for the initial 21 holes in her Round-of-32 match against Olivia Duan, and being 2 down to Texas standout Cindy Hsu with just four holes to go, Brooke showcased her fighting spirit. She rallied to win two of the next three holes, and even after missing a short putt to secure the win in regulation, she triumphed over Hsu on the first extra hole to progress to the quarterfinals.
“People are always amazed because here you have this sweet, blonde-haired kid who’s so nice, but on the golf course, she’s just so tough,” noted Michigan State head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. Brooke attributes her steadfastness to her younger sister, Ashleigh, who inspires her every day.
Ashleigh’s Journey and Influence
Ashleigh Biermann was born with Jacobsen Syndrome, a rare chromosomal disorder leading to multiple health challenges. Despite this, she has never let her condition hinder her determination. Today, at 20, Ashleigh bikes, swims, and walks about five miles daily, embodying resilience.
“She’s just so relentless,” Bill said, recalling Ashleigh’s commitment to her job at school. Brooke, inspired by her sister’s perseverance, reflects, “Being able to walk with her reminds me of my own blessings in being able to compete at a high level.”
The Bond of Sisters
Brooke has been a devoted sister, defending Ashleigh against bullies and supporting her through countless medical appointments. Their bond is strong; Ashleigh frequently reaches out to Brooke, and they share special moments, like a surprise concert for Ashleigh’s birthday.
Competitive Spirit and Family Legacy
With her father, Bill, caddying for her, Brooke feels connected to her family legacy, especially after a memorable moment involving a yellow golf ball gifted by her late grandfather. As she progresses in the tournament, Brooke remains grateful for the opportunity to compete and for Ashleigh’s inspiration.
“No matter what happens, I’m going to be happy. I feel blessed to be here and to have Ashleigh as my motivation,” Brooke expressed, highlighting the deep connection between her competitive pursuits and family love.
