MILWAUKEE — Pacers’ Impressive Run
The Indiana Pacers surprised many by reaching the NBA Finals last season, narrowly missing out on their first championship. Over the past two seasons, they have clinched five playoff series and made it to consecutive Eastern Conference finals. With a fast-paced, team-centered offensive strategy, characterized by fluid player and ball movement, the Pacers have sparked considerable discussion as other teams look to enhance their tempo and ball movement.
Bucks’ Perspective
Few teams grasp the effectiveness of the Pacers’ strategy as well as the Milwaukee Bucks, who have been eliminated by Indiana in the playoffs for the past two years. Despite this, Bucks coach Doc Rivers believes it’s a stretch to claim that teams, including the Bucks, are striving to emulate the Pacers.
Coach Rivers’ Strategy
“There’s a difference,” Rivers remarked after the Bucks’ initial training camp session. “There are copycats. Many teams spent years trying to become like Golden State, but none succeeded. We won’t be the Pacers; we’ll stick to our identity.” He stressed the importance of adapting their style while staying true to themselves, suggesting that trying to imitate others could lead to mistakes.
Need for Identity Change
Though Rivers’ comments can be seen as a response to offseason changes made by GM Jon Horst, he emphasized the need for an identity shift even before last season ended. “I felt strongly that it’s challenging to win with our previous playing style and pace,” he stated, highlighting the necessity for a quicker game and versatile defenders to advance further.
Transforming Bucks’ Playstyle
In recent seasons with Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks operated at a slower pace, often lacking urgency in initiating offense. Last season, they crossed half-court before the shot clock hit 19 seconds just 61.8% of the time, ranking 25th in the league. This season, they aim to speed up, aided by new center Myles Turner, who brings insights from his time with the Pacers.
Developing New Habits
“Just playing pickup and working together recently, I’ve promoted fast breaks and quick movements,” Turner noted, emphasizing the significance of these strategies as the team incorporates new concepts. The success of this transition will be crucial, especially with key players like Antetokounmpo returning from illness.
Roster and Competition Updates
As the Bucks prepare for the season, they have 15 players on guaranteed contracts, but GM Horst explained that this doesn’t mean they are set for opening night. “We’ve found opportunities to bring in players that greatly enhance our roster,” Horst mentioned, indicating a competitive environment for roster spots. Players like Amir Coffey have gained attention during training, potentially challenging others for a spot on the team.
