Cal Raleigh’s Historic Home Run Derby Participation
SEATTLE — Cal Raleigh has established himself as a powerhouse in his remarkable first half of the 2025 season. He now has the opportunity to make history as the first catcher to win the T-Mobile Home Run Derby (ESPN).
Raleigh expressed his excitement about the event, noting that it will be convenient for his family and friends to attend. “It’s really cool,” he said. His father, Todd, will pitch for him during the competition, while his younger brother, Todd Jr., is expected to catch.
Todd Jr. is already making waves in travel baseball, under the guidance of their father, while donning Cal’s former equipment. “As a dad, it doesn’t get any better than that. It’s kind of like one of those Hallmark moments,” Todd shared with MLB.com.
Raleigh hinted that he might attempt to switch-hit during the Derby, following Adley Rutschman, the only player to have done so in the event’s recent history. He stated, “That’d be kind of cool,” while considering the batting format and strategy to maximize his performance.
Cal is among the first participants announced for the Derby, joining fellow competitor Ronald Acuña Jr. Raleigh aims to replicate the success of his teammate Julio Rodríguez, who had a standout 2023 Derby performance in Seattle. Additionally, with 32 homers this season, Raleigh leads Major League Baseball, setting records for both catchers and switch-hitters prior to the All-Star break.
Although not officially an All-Star yet, Raleigh has garnered significant fan support, ranking second in the American League voting. This surge in popularity follows his six-year, $105 million contract extension with the Mariners earlier this season.
As he prepares for the Home Run Derby, Raleigh plans to practice ahead of the event. His rising profile not only showcases his talent but also promises to further captivate fans when he takes the stage at the Derby.
