The night before Cameron Green underwent back surgery last October, he received an unexpected message from Jasprit Bumrah, his former teammate at Mumbai Indians. The Indian fast bowler reached out during a Test match in India, adding significance to his gesture for the young Australian all-rounder.
Bumrah had faced the same surgery 18 months prior and made a remarkable recovery, demonstrating even better bowling performances afterward. This reassured Green that he was making the right choice by opting for surgery.
“That is really special and makes you feel a lot better about it,” Green said. “Watching him post-surgery during the summer filled me with a lot of confidence.”
Green is likely to return to the playing XI at No. 3, with Marnus Labuschagne moving up the order. Although Green won’t be bowling immediately, he’s eager to resume his Test career, even if it means starting solely as a batter.
Green’s outlook on recovering from injuries showcases his maturity. He often speaks of “silver linings,” viewing his back injuries as opportunities to focus solely on becoming a better batter.
Reflecting on his recovery, Green expressed surprise at how swiftly his body recovered compared to others, mentioning a friend who struggled more. He felt fully agile within two weeks, prompting coaches to tell him to slow down.
