Tragedy Strikes Liverpool Soccer Celebration
LONDON (AP) — A 53-year-old British man drove a minivan into a gathering of Liverpool soccer fans celebrating their Premier League championship on Monday, injuring over 45 individuals as joy turned to panic amidst the celebrations.
Authorities stated that the driver was the sole participant in the incident and that it is not being treated as a terrorist act. Emergency services transported 27 people to local hospitals, including two with serious injuries, while an additional 20 received treatment on-site for minor injuries, according to Dave Kitchin of North West Ambulance Service. Among the injured were at least four children.
First responders had to lift the van to free four victims, including a child, who had become trapped underneath. A paramedic on a bicycle was also hit but fortunately did not sustain injuries.
City Council leader Liam Robinson expressed concern over the incident, stating, “It has cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day for the city.” Moments before the crash, a gray minivan swerved into the parade route, colliding with fans adorned in red Liverpool attire. Footage shared on social media captured the van striking a man and pushing through the crowd before finally stopping.
Harry Rashid, who witnessed the event with his family, described it as happening “extremely fast,” mentioning the sound of people being knocked off the vehicle. He noted the crowd’s reaction as they rushed to the van and began to break its windows, but the driver accelerated again, continuing to plow through the gathering. “It was horrible,” Rashid remarked, adding that it appeared deliberate.
The police are conducting an extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and urged the public to refrain from speculating or disseminating “disturbing content” online. In an effort to counter misinformation, they described the suspect as white.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident as appalling and lauded the bravery of rescue workers, reinforcing that everyone, especially children, should enjoy celebrations without fear. The spirit of the city, noted Starmer, is rooted in unity during tough times. Liverpool’s legacy is shadowed by a previous tragedy where 97 fans lost their lives during a stadium crush, which has left lasting memories in the community. The team expressed its thoughts and prayers for those affected, while the Premier League also issued a statement voicing shock at the incident.
