CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Familiar Tale for the Cavs
The Cleveland Cavaliers faced a similar scenario yet again, but this time with a different outcome.
On Sunday at Rocket Arena, Cleveland fell to the Charlotte Hornets, 119-111, in overtime.
Frustration in the Air
Star guard Donovan Mitchell expressed disappointment, stating, “It’s upsetting. It’s stuff that we can control. I’m not going to use the word concern.” Just two nights earlier, the Cavs narrowly escaped an embarrassing defeat against the struggling Washington Wizards.
A Rollercoaster Game
Once again facing a lower-ranked Eastern Conference team, the Cavs found themselves trailing. They were behind by 10 at halftime, and at one point in the third quarter, the deficit grew to 17, leaving them down by nine heading into the fourth.
Hopeful Rally
As Charlotte floundered with missed shots at the start of the final period, Cleveland launched a spirited comeback that excited the fans. With 7:27 remaining, the game was within two possessions. Just a minute later, the Cavs briefly claimed their second lead of the second half.
Missed Opportunities
However, the Hornets quickly regained control, setting up a tense finish. After reclaiming a narrow lead, the Cavs saw Charlotte tie the game with a three-pointer from Brandon Miller, sending the game into overtime as Mitchell missed a potential game-winner.
Struggles in Overtime
In the extra period, the Hornets shut out Cleveland 8-0, with the Cavs missing all ten of their shots. Coach Kenny Atkinson credited the Hornets’ defense for neutralizing their game plan.
Player Performances and Next Steps
Darius Garland led the team with 26 points, battling through pain from a toe injury. Mitchell added 17 points but struggled with shooting. Cleveland’s defense faltered, allowing Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel to score 29 points, leading the game. Despite the loss, Mitchell emphasized the need for the team to pull together, stating, “The city deserves better than what we have been giving.”
Looking Ahead
The Cavs are set to face the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night, with tipoff scheduled for 8 p.m.
