CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cavaliers (59-14) have achieved their sixth three-game winning streak of the season by defeating the San Antonio Spurs, 124-116, on Thursday at Rocket Arena.
The Cavaliers boast over 50 wins when leading at the start of the fourth quarter due to their consistent momentum entering the final period, and Thursday was no different.
When the Spurs utilized their challenges to reverse decisions and gain free throws—temporarily taking an 81-79 lead in the third quarter—the Cavaliers needed to respond quickly.
Donovan Mitchell stepped up, effectively managing the offense. He drove to the lane and assisted Sam Merrill, who was cutting in for an easy layup. On the following possession, Merrill connected on a three-pointer from the wing, contributing 13 points in total, including three from beyond the arc.
“We have complete confidence in him,” said Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson about Merrill. “He impacts the game on both ends, generating offense even when he’s not shooting. His movement running screens and cutting really pressures the defense.”
Mitchell punctuated the third quarter with an electrifying dunk, igniting the crowd as the game approached its final stretch. He concluded with 25 points, a career-high 14 assists, and 8 rebounds.
As the game progressed, Cleveland’s vigorous defense allowed them to limit the Spurs to just seven points in the last four minutes. Nonetheless, the Cavaliers recognized the need to play at their best for the full 48 minutes, an approach critical as they eye the playoffs ahead.
