Celebrating 50 Seasons of the Seattle Mariners
The 2026 season will be a milestone for the Seattle Mariners, marking their 50th anniversary since establishment in 1977. Throughout their history, the Mariners have made six postseason appearances, winning four AL West Division Titles, most notably during their record-breaking 116-win season in 2001. Despite being the only Major League team yet to reach the World Series, they have competed in league championship series on four occasions and came agonizingly close in 1995, just eight outs away from their first championship showdown.
Before the Mariners took the field, the Seattle Pilots offered fans in the Pacific Northwest an introduction to major league baseball. The Pilots played just one season in 1969 before relocating to Milwaukee to become the Brewers, but they left a mark that led to the Mariners’ formation.
In 1977, the Mariners joined the American League as one of two new teams, sharing that expansion year with the Toronto Blue Jays. From 1977 to 1999, they called The Kingdome their home.
The early years for the Mariners proved challenging; it wasn’t until 1991 that they achieved their first winning season. Around this period, they began to build a foundation with players like Jay Buhner, Randy Johnson, and Ken Griffey Jr. In a dramatic turn of events during the 1995 season, the team rallied from a 13-game deficit, forcing a tie-breaking game against the California Angels and ultimately making an unforgettable playoff run.
During the American League Division Series against the Yankees, the Mariners found themselves on the edge of elimination after losing the first two games in New York but came back to win the series. The highlight of that run was Edgar Martinez’s clutch double, allowing the Mariners to reach the American League Championship Series, a significant achievement in their history.
While the Mariners fell short in the 1995 ALCS against the Cleveland Indians, that Summer of ’95 reignited passion for baseball in the Pacific Northwest and helped secure the team’s place in Seattle. In 1999, the Mariners transitioned to their new home, T-Mobile Park, which features a retractable roof.

After two decades without postseason play, the Mariners made a remarkable comeback, reaching the playoffs twice in the last four years. Following a thrilling division series against the Tigers and a near-miss for the Fall Classic, they are now favored to represent the American League deep into October. The 2026 season will also see them don a special “50 Seasons” patch on their jerseys, marking this significant anniversary.
To commemorate their 50th season, the Mariners will host a celebration weekend from August 7-9, coinciding with a series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The highlight of the event will be the 50 Seasons Celebration Night on August 8, honoring the franchise’s Top 50 Greatest Players as voted by fans. Notable names expected to be celebrated include Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez, Ichiro Suzuki, and Jay Buhner.
In the words of Mariners President of Business Operations Kevin Martinez, “Celebrating 50 seasons of Mariners baseball is a tribute to the generations of fans, the community, and the Mariners players who have defined this franchise.” This sentiment echoes the enduring passion and dedication of the Mariners’ base as they face the future with enthusiasm.
