Tribute to ABC13 Anchor Emeritus Dave Ward
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — ABC13 Anchor Emeritus Dave Ward has passed away, marking the end of an era for Houston news.
For over 50 years, Dave served as Houston’s beloved anchorman, always beginning his broadcasts with the warm greeting, “Good evening, friends.” His connection with viewers reflected his deep love for the city he proudly called home.
Born David Henry Ward in Dallas in 1939, he spent his childhood in Huntsville. He started his career in radio at KGKB Radio in Tyler while still in college and quickly advanced to Program Director at WACO Radio within a year. In 1962, he relocated to Houston, where he worked as a News Reporter and Director at KNUZ Radio before joining Channel 13 in 1966 as its only street reporter and photographer.
In early 1967, Dave transitioned to anchor Channel 13’s weekday 7 a.m. newscast. That same year, he became the host of the much-loved “Dialing for Dollars,” which evolved into “Good Morning Houston.” By January 1968, he had taken over as the anchor for Eyewitness News at 6 and 10 p.m.
Record-Breaking Career
Dave celebrated a significant milestone in 2016 when he was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for being the longest-running local TV news anchor at a single station. After retiring from his anchoring role at ABC13 in May 2017, he continued to share Houston’s iconic stories through his series, “Dave Ward’s Houston.”
Over five decades, Dave reported on an array of subjects, from space missions to local politics and natural disasters. He conducted notable interviews, including with President Obama, establishing himself as one of the most trusted news figures in the region.
Community Engagement and Contributions
In addition to his journalistic accomplishments, Dave was highly involved in community service. He held leadership roles in various organizations, including the Houston Easter Seals Society and Crime Stoppers. His innovative crime reenactments for Crime Stoppers became a model for similar initiatives nationwide.
Dave earned numerous accolades during his illustrious career, including the City of Houston Public Service Award for his coverage of the Managua earthquake and the Leon Goldstein Award for Outstanding Service in Fighting Crime from Houston Crime Stoppers. In 2017, he received induction into multiple Halls of Fame recognizing his significant contributions to journalism.
As we remember Dave Ward, we honor a remarkable career characterized by dedication, integrity, and a genuine love for storytelling that endeared him to viewers across Houston and beyond.
