Chelsea is currently negotiating to acquire AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
The French international’s contract at San Siro is set to expire next summer, and he has not yet signed an extension, prompting Chelsea to explore the possibility of securing his services.
A transfer to west London seems likely.
If Maignan joins Stamford Bridge, it would lead to another overhaul in the goalkeeping department.
Chelsea already has five goalkeepers on their roster—Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, Mike Penders, and Kepa Arrizabalaga—but Maignan’s addition would position him to compete for the top spot.
Maignan has been with AC Milan since 2021 after transferring from Lille, where he won Ligue 1. He played a crucial role in Milan’s Serie A title victory in 2022 and the Supercoppa Italiana triumph in 2024. He has also represented France 30 times and was included in the Euro 2024 team of the tournament.
Analysis: Chelsea Must Trim Goalkeeper Squad
Kaveh Solhekol, chief reporter for Sky Sports News, states: “Chelsea is aggressively pursuing Maignan, and the player appears ready to take on the challenge in the Premier League, with only a year remaining on his contract with AC Milan. Many Chelsea fans have been calling for a new goalkeeper due to uncertainties surrounding Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen.”
“Chelsea currently has a crowded goalkeeper lineup, including Djordje Petrovic, who is on loan at Strasbourg, and Mike Penders, who is also loaned out. With Kepa on loan at Bournemouth, having six goalkeepers of this caliber next season is unrealistic. If Maignan joins, it’s almost certain one or more of these goalkeepers would need to be offloaded.”
