Coco Gauff’s Resilience at the Miami Open
Coco Gauff may be dealing with an unfamiliar arm injury, fluctuating performance, and the pressure of revamping her serve under the scrutiny of the tennis community, but her fighting spirit remains undeterred.
Despite facing challenging conditions, Gauff’s mental toughness is carrying her through the Miami Open and leading her to her best result at this hometown event. She has reached the semi-finals for the first time in her career, having secured a hard-fought victory against Bencic with scores of 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Even though Gauff has struggled to maintain her top form throughout the Miami tournament, as evidenced by needing to go to a final set in all her matches, she has consistently found a way to persevere.
“I think it just shows my mind and it’s just all about mentality out there at the end of the day,” Gauff remarked. “Sometimes I experience imposter syndrome, and even when they announce my achievements, it feels surreal. But I need to remind myself that I am a good player.”
Gauff’s performance against Bencic was her standout moment of the tournament, effectively retrieving challenging shots and applying pressure from defensive positions while excelling in baseline exchanges, particularly with her effective drop shots.
Her serve, which has drawn much attention due to recent struggles that prompted a change in technique with coach Gavin Macmillan, showed signs of improvement in this match. Gauff delivered six aces and executed crucial first serves while keeping double faults to just five in three sets.
Having grown up in nearby Delray Beach, Gauff had previously found the Miami Open to be her least successful WTA 1000 event. With recent injury concerns, including a previous retirement at Indian Wells due to forearm issues, skeptics wondered if she should even compete this year. However, Gauff continues to demonstrate resilience despite the odds.
In her next match, Gauff will compete against the 13th seed Karolína Muchová, who recently claimed victory at a WTA 1000 event in Doha. Gauff maintains a favorable 5-0 record against Muchová, setting the stage for an intriguing rematch.
