Nervous Beginnings for the AP Top 25
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Today has me feeling anxious, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. This marks my first time submitting a ballot for the Associated Press Top 25, and it’s hard to avoid the risk of seeming foolish.
Uncertainties in Rankings
We are tasked with ranking teams with limited knowledge at this early stage. The objective is to assess them from 1 to 25 based on their current abilities rather than their performance in March. Regardless, there’s a lot we still don’t know; it’s uncertain how well new transfers will integrate, or if unexpected players will emerge in the national spotlight.
Key Questions for the Season
Can Florida repeat their success? Will Houston return to finish what they started? Is this the year Purdue breaks through to the Final Four? The truth is, no one had clear foresight last year, and I find some comfort in that.
Preseason Stats to Consider
Notably, only three teams from the 2024 preseason Top 10 remained there at the end of the season. Among the 14 teams that appeared in both polls, the average drop was 7.5 spots. Florida, the eventual national champion, began the season ranked 21st.
My Ranking Approach
For my first ranking, I blended consensus opinions, my intuition, and extensive data from Bart Torvik’s ratings. I prioritized teams with more returning players for this early overview. Ultimately, any glaring mistakes are solely mine.
Top Teams on My Ballot
- Houston: With three starters returning from a team that nearly won a national title, I believe Houston is well-positioned for another Final Four appearance.
- Purdue: Boasting a strong returning squad and one of the best coaches in the game, Purdue’s motivation to reach a Final Four in Indianapolis should drive them.
- Florida: After winning last year, Florida remains a formidable contender, aided by Boogie Fland’s decision to transfer there.
- UConn: The Huskies return three starters and added key transfer Silas Demary, showing a renewed focus on defense.
- Duke: Despite returning no starters, Duke has talented freshmen and transfers, which keeps them high on my list.
Conclusion and Quick Updates
Stay tuned for updates on various teams as they prepare for the upcoming season. Exciting times are ahead with several coaches making significant changes, and new players joining established programs.
