Collin Morikawa is part of the lineup for this week’s Rocket Classic, but it’s his off-course remarks that have been making headlines again.
During The Players Championship earlier this year, Morikawa stated that he doesn’t ‘owe anyone’ after skipping his media responsibilities following a near-miss at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Brandel Chamblee commented that Morikawa could have handled his controversial remarks better, which were not well-received by many.
Morikawa’s candid demeanor continued before the Rocket Classic when he was asked about who would carry his bag at The Open Championship following his parting with Joe Greiner. In response to Golfweek’s Adam Schupak at the pre-tournament press conference in Detroit, Morikawa said: “I don’t. And I read your article. I’m not here to dictate how you do your job, but I don’t understand why you would portray me negatively by emphasizing my quote regarding pro-am partners.”
He added, “These individuals are making significant contributions and are fundamental to both the community and the Rocket Classic. For you to release a quote that puts me down by implying I made them wait for two and a half hours is inappropriate.”
Ryan Lavner shared his views on Morikawa’s comments during the Golf Channel Podcast with Rex & Lav, stating: “Morikawa seems sensitive about how he’s been depicted recently, particularly after incidents at Bay Hill. It’s not uncommon for players to be frustrated and retreat from media interaction after tough losses.”
While both Morikawa and Rory McIlroy have faced similar media issues recently, McIlroy has found considerable success, securing three PGA Tour victories, including achieving a career grand slam at The Masters. Conversely, Morikawa is still pursuing his first win of the season, having recently finished second at both The Sentry and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He also tied for second place at the last Rocket Mortgage Classic, which was won by Rickie Fowler.
