Quarterbacks
San Francisco starts the season with two quarterbacks on their active roster. Purdy, a seventh-round pick from 2022, has secured a five-year extension, affirming his role as the franchise quarterback, having thrown for nearly 10,000 yards and 64 touchdowns in 36 games. Behind him, the 49ers have signed Jones to a two-year contract; he is a former first-round pick with 52 career starts and a Pro Bowl selection. Rookie Kurtis Rourke is on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list as he recovers from a knee injury.
Running Backs/Fullback
McCaffrey enters 2025 in top form and ready for another excellent season after a productive training camp. The 49ers acquired Robinson Jr. from the Washington Commanders, who is coming off a career-best season with eight rushing touchdowns. Robinson aims to complement McCaffrey, aspiring to form “the best duo in the league.” Second-year player Guerendo adds depth after a promising rookie year, while fifth-round selection James makes the roster as he recovers from a pinkie injury. Veteran fullback Juszczyk, who signed a two-year extension in March, is a key figure in the running game, earning his ninth consecutive Pro Bowl selection and another AP All-Pro nod in 2024.
Wide Receivers
The 49ers receiving corps begins the season without Brandon Aiyuk (Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, knee), and Demarcus Robinson is also out (Reserve/Suspended list). Pearsall, a second-year wideout, is ready to step into a leadership role after displaying reliable hands in his rookie season. Rookie Watkins, who was a fourth-round pick from Ole Miss, made the team thanks to impressive preseason performances, providing versatility in the slot. Additionally, San Francisco acquired Moore in August through a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Tight Ends
Kittle remains the linchpin of San Francisco’s tight end group following his sixth Pro Bowl season. He is accompanied by Farrell, a free-agent addition known for his blocking skills, and Tonges, who joined the 49ers’ practice squad in 2023.
Offensive Line
Williams, an eleven-time Pro Bowler, continues to lead the 49ers offensive line, with veteran center Brendel returning in a crucial position. Guards Puni, in his second year, and Bartch, who is in his sixth season, offer consistency, while right tackle McKivitz seeks to build on a successful 2024. Hennessy, now in his fifth NFL season after joining last year, contributes depth to the offensive line. Rookies Colby, a seventh-rounder from 2025, and undrafted free agent Moss were among the standout performers in training camp, making the initial 53-man roster. Veterans Burford and Pleasants complete the group, adding flexibility across various positions on the line.
Defensive Line
Bosa, a five-time Pro Bowler, leads the 49ers’ defensive front once more. Newly signed Huff enhances the pass rush, while first-round draft pick Williams along with rookies Collins and West provide youthful strength. With Kevin Givens currently on Injured Reserve, linemen Gross-Matos, Anderson, Okuayinonu, Davis, Beal Jr., and Elliot fill out the defensive line roster.
Linebackers and Defensive Backs
All-Pro Warner once again leads the defensive unit. Behind him, Winters, Bethune, and rookie LB Martin stood out during training camp with their consistent playmaking and development. Special teams standout Gifford also makes the roster due to his dependability in multiple game phases. In the cornerback position, Lenoir starts as the top defensive back, with second-year corner Green opposite him. Rookie CB Stout is set to return from a preseason calf injury, while Luter Jr. and Lucas earned their spots thanks to strong preseason efforts, adding depth to the secondary. Veteran Neal, who last played with the Miami Dolphins, provides versatility. Injured players Jakob Robinson and Tre Brown will begin the season on Injured Reserve.
Safeties and Special Teams
The safety squad combines youth and experience, featuring third-year player Brown, veteran Pinnock (who comes to San Francisco following four seasons with the Jets and Giants), and rookie safety Sigle, who made a strong impression in the preseason. Malik Mustapha will start the year on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list due to a knee injury. Moody is back for his third season as the team’s kicker, with long snapper Weeks, a Pro Bowler, providing reliable performance in his 16th NFL season.
