The Future of Coney Island: A Critical Decision
Coney Island is at a pivotal moment. We have the opportunity to revitalize this struggling area through a new casino, but we also risk continuing down the same path.
Honoring a Vision for Growth
As a former member of the City Council, I had the privilege of representing Coney Island and collaborating with Mayor Mike Bloomberg to achieve the 2010 rezoning. Our goal was clear from the start: to transform Coney Island into more than just a seasonal attraction, envisioning it as a vibrant, year-round destination with hotels, entertainment venues, and ample economic opportunities for the local community.
Navigating Difficult Choices
Having a background in policy-making and understanding community needs, I recognize the tough choices faced by current officials regarding the proposed entertainment center and casino. These decisions are significant, as they will impact the future of the entire community.
Listening to Community Voices
I remember the long hours spent in public hearings, where many voices opposed to the rezoning were prominent. However, it became apparent that many dissenters were not actual residents of Coney Island. Those who did reside in the area and voiced opposition often had a history of resisting revitalization efforts.
Community Aspiration for Change
During my time in office, I engaged with community members, religious leaders, and residents, listening to their hopes for change. Today, the message remains consistent: the community seeks jobs, economic investment, public safety, and better opportunities for their families.
The Need for Economic Investment
Coney Island is grappling with a staggering 17% unemployment rate. Introducing a world-class entertainment venue, including a casino, is a crucial step towards addressing this pressing issue. The project promises thousands of jobs, prioritizing local residents, and fostering long-term growth for the community.
A Vision for a Brighter Future
The 2010 rezoning led to significant improvements in Coney Island, yielding a new gym, hundreds of affordable housing units, an upgraded amusement district, and enhanced public spaces. Current officials have the chance to further develop this vision with substantial community benefits, including a community trust fund and dedicated resources for public safety. The Coney’s initiative to offer local residents equity stakes and financial support for community organizations presents a transformative opportunity to rebuild and reimagine Coney Island, ensuring prosperity and public safety for its residents.
A Call to Action
Coney Island has long been a place of entertainment, but it now requires assistance to evolve into a true year-round destination. The Coney can fulfill this promise. I urge today’s elected officials to seize this opportunity to change the community for the better by creating thousands of jobs and turning the aspirations of Coney Island residents into a vibrant reality.
