Jos Buttler has expressed great admiration for Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, reflecting on these topics and more in a recent interview.
Your performance mirrors that of your standout 2022 season, where you clinched numerous awards.
We had a fantastic victory against RCB in Bengaluru the other night, showcasing solid team effort with both bat and ball. I’m really pleased to have made a contribution with an unbeaten 73 to secure the win.
Post the white-ball series in India and the Champions Trophy, do you feel more relaxed enjoying the IPL without the pressure of captaincy?
The outcomes in India and during the Champions Trophy were disappointing, and as a captain, that can be burdensome. Initially, stepping down from captaincy left me feeling downcast, but now I feel liberated to focus on my batting and wicket-keeping. I’m channeling my energy positively and enjoying the game more.
What are your thoughts on the Gujarat Titans franchise? What sets it apart from others?
The atmosphere from Day One has been fantastic. Even after a less successful last season, the team’s camaraderie remains strong. I appreciate the team’s unity and the supportive dynamic fostered by Vikram Solanki and Ashish Nehra. It’s great working with familiar faces from previous teams too.
How would you evaluate Shubman Gill both as a batsman and captain?
Shubman is undoubtedly a star and the future face of Indian cricket. It’s exhilarating to watch his training up close. He’s leading excellently, maintaining strong relationships with the team and coaching staff while exhibiting passion and calmness on the field.
What have you noticed about this IPL season compared to others? There seems to be a more aggressive approach from the batsmen right from the start.
The intent from batsmen definitely appears heightened this year, supported by the Impact Player rule. Initially, it seemed essential to strike aggressively from the first ball; however, scoring 200 runs has been challenging in recent matches. Cricket’s nature ensures that it remains an unpredictable and respectful game.
How is GT adapting to the current trend?
We’ve discussed adapting our strategy based on the conditions presented during the games. If conditions call for a target of 240, we aim for it; if 180-190 suffices, we adapt our approach accordingly.
After years in the IPL, what stands out to you?
The IPL is a remarkable tournament that has significantly contributed to my development as a cricketer. The depth of Indian cricket is unmatched, and combined with the top overseas talent, it creates an exceptional competition with high standards. It’s always a joy to participate, and every season brings about new trends and changes, reflecting football’s ever-evolving nature. The introduction of impact substitutions has also made a significant impact in recent seasons.
Is there a player that has particularly impressed you this season?
Sai Sudharsan has certainly stood out. He is an exceptional talent, and witnessing his dedication up close has shown me that he has a bright future ahead. He’s not only skilled but also a wonderful individual, making our partnerships enjoyable so far.
Having played in front of a huge crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium, how have you adjusted to this experience?
Playing in front of such large crowds is thrilling; it often feels surreal. I remember my first games where the atmosphere was overwhelming. Now, as an experienced player, while I appreciate the atmosphere, I’ve learned to focus on the game itself.
