The US Open has successfully reignited interest in doubles in 2025!
After a complete transformation of the mixed doubles event, organizers faced significant backlash both leading up to and during the tournament.
Despite some complaints regarding the changes, an increased number of fans tuned in to watch the US Open mixed doubles, making the two-day event a hit overall. Viewership was the highest it has ever been.
Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori claimed the mixed doubles title, but that’s just one of the doubles events taking place at the US Open this year.
Jon Wertheim Discusses Men’s Doubles Draw Delay
In the latest ‘Quick Served’ episode, Jon Wertheim provided insights into the delay of the men’s doubles draw release.
“You may have noticed that the men’s doubles draw hasn’t been released yet. This isn’t typical, but it’s intentional,” he stated.
“The USTA (United States Tennis Association) opted to experiment by delaying the doubles draw to maximize its visibility during Labor Day weekend. This strategy also hopes to entice first-round singles players who lost to reconsider entering the doubles.”
Notable First-Round Defeats
Venus Williams, having lost in the first round, signed up for the doubles late, setting a precedent for others. Some high-profile players faced early exits, including former champions like Daniil Medvedev and Marin Cilic, who might be potential recruits for men’s doubles.
The men’s doubles tournament kicks off on August 30, and with such significant first-round losses, curiosity grows about whether any singles players will join the doubles fray.
