Browns’ Deshaun Watson Making Steady Progress in Comeback
CLEVELAND, Ohio — As the focus in Browns Town shifts to a four-way quarterback competition, Deshaun Watson is making significant strides in his recovery at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus.
Watson is not involved in the quarterback race featuring Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, Joe Flacco, and Shedeur Sanders. Instead, he has been practicing indoors with receivers Jerry Jeudy and David Bell, according to a league source who spoke with cleveland.com. He shed his walking boot weeks ago, sharing updates and videos of his training sessions on Instagram.
Jeudy is participating in the Browns’ voluntary offseason program, while Bell is on the mend from last season’s hip surgery.
Having undergone surgery for his re-torn Achilles on January 10, Watson is resolute in his recovery, despite Browns owner Jimmy Haslam referring to the trade for him as “a big swing and a miss.” In response to these comments, Watson expressed his determination to return stronger than ever.
Watson acknowledged the doubts surrounding him but emphasized that he has faith in himself and his work ethic. He stated, “Everyone’s doubting me… But I believe in the work that I put in.” He admitted to allowing criticism to affect him in the past but feels better equipped to handle it now, saying, “When you get knocked down and have to stand back up, it ignites a fire within you.”
Although it’s unclear if Watson will play this season—undergoing standard Achilles repair typically takes about nine months—Browns GM Andrew Berry remains cautious yet hopeful regarding his return. Berry noted Watson’s commitment to rehab and the potential for a quicker recovery.
Watson, who has struggled with injuries and a lengthy suspension, has been diligently working at the Browns facility. Coach Kevin Stefanski provided a positive update on his progress, indicating that Watson has been actively engaged in both rehab and meetings, signifying his intent to join the competition whenever possible.
