Just over a week has passed since Devon Walker departed from “Saturday Night Live,” and he is now reflecting on his three years with the show.
Walker, recognized for his portrayal of Eric Adams, expressed conflicting feelings about his time at “SNL” in his announcement, stating, “At times it was amazing, and other times it was incredibly toxic… Despite the dysfunction, we formed a unique family.”
During a stroll through Madison Square Park, Walker shared with Variety, “I’m deeply thankful for my experience at the show. I appreciate both the highs and the lows—I’m just glad to have been part of it.”
What did you think of the public’s reaction to your exit?
I truly appreciate the support. If people are upset, it signifies that my work resonated with them, which is invaluable. I create because I love it, and I hope my art touches others. While I understand their sadness, I find it a bit over the top. I’m not leaving the industry; I’ll continue making content.
Did your departure meet your expectations for your time on “SNL”?
Yes, I’m fulfilled with my time there. I achieved what I set out to do: create along with friends. Comedy has its quirks; I never aimed specifically for “SNL.” For me, just being part of the show and lasting as long as I did is a remarkable success.
Was it challenging to establish your identity amongst big names?
That’s part of the experience. Yes, it can be tough. The show often brings in high-profile guests, which can overshadow cast members. I understand why they prioritize guest stars to draw in viewers.
What lies ahead for you post-“SNL”?
The options are wide open. I have a film project in collaboration with former “SNL” writer Gary Richardson set to shoot soon. I might also consider a tour in the spring. I’m eager to explore dramatic roles as well, following positive interest from Netflix for potential discussions about my next ventures.
